new cap w/o key
05/04/12 at 08:23:33

My Savage gas cap is locked up...the key can be inserted but it wont turn. I'm going to drill it out and want to replace it with one that doesn't require a key. What kind of cap do I need to get that will fit the tank?

Whatever you come up with, be sure it's vented.

Have you pushed down on the cap to relieve the friction on the retracting parts? Put some graphite in the lock? YOu have another key?

Yeah...I have 3 keys that I've tried. I've tried pushing down on the cap as well and gave it a few taps with a mallet, but no luck.
I've tried graphite, PB Blaster, silicone lube....nothing has been able to free the lock.

pick it

take a flat wire like the kind you find in windshield wipers and bend it about quarter inch from the end, use this to twist the key cylinder.
get another round wire like a small paper clip, on the end put a little bump so it will just push one pin in at a time.
use the flat wire to twist the cylinder and stroke up and down with the round wire, keep doing it till the lock opens.

then use the instruction in tool box rekeying.

Yeah its only a few bucks worth of gas serowbot.
But you really want to take a chance with the haters of riders out there.
Bad enough they throw their lights on bright, try to run you off the road, slow down ect.
You really want to leave it unlocked so some A-Hole can dump some sugar in your tank just because he dont like Bikes?
Ill keep my locking cap.

I guess I'll try to pick it, its worth a shot. But even if that opens it up...I'm wondering if the lock will still be usable with a key after?

Picking it means aligning the pins w/o a key.  Not forcing it.
Look thru the tOol box rekeying it'll show you how to rekey.
You only need 1 pin to keep the cylinder locked.

I just went through this. TAKE IT TO A LOCKSMITH! let them have a look before drilling it out. For ten bucks they may be able to pick it. Finding a replacement will cost you 50 bucks or more  with a key and working lock. I got lucky and found one at a salvage yard but its a pain in the butt for sure.

I considered a locksmith, I guess i have to call around and get some quotes.
What I'm wondering is if the locksmith ends up picking the lock....will the lock be in good enough condition to continue using?
If he picks it and its in bad shape, I mine as well just drill it out and buy a new one.

You can take the lock apart & clean it up & get it working once he picks it,, picking a lock doesnt harm it any way,.unless ya "pick it" with a crowbar..

Mine got stuck as i was filling up, I got "lucky" and it was already off so I couldn't get it back on.

Luckily there was a AAA tow truck there so i stuffed the hole and got a lift home.

It took the locksmith 5 minutes to get it open, change the pins so that my key worked again, and lubricated all of the moving pieces. Its smooth as silk.

If you can ride any distance and still get home, I would strongly consider taking it to a locksmith. wont cost more than 20 bucks. but if you feel like drilling is your only option go for it, its just a lot of trouble to go through if a locksmith can pick it, clean it, and have you on your way. Just my 2 cents.

I looked and looked for non oem replacements and found none. all replacement caps seemed to needed to be welded in.

good luck with your cap.

You can have the lock cylinder left w/o a lock,,so anything will open it, a screwdriver, or key blank, you could even mod the lock cylinder & put a knob on it,

I think youd be way ahead to not drill it,.
