This Should Be Easy!!!
05/03/12 at 13:24:07
I do feel like an idiot - a very frustrated one at that. I do not have a great deal of mechanical aptitude but can do basic maintenance. I removed the front fender to be repainted - the paint is not a match but that's a different story. I've put the fender back on but I cannot attach the axle - it just keeps spinning and won't seat itself. Is there some trick to lining it up or do I just need glasses?
Thanks.

Take the weight off the axle, push and turn.

Thanks for your replies justin_o_guy2, Serowbot and verslagen1. I had removed the pinch bolt from the right side of the fork when I first took off the wheel. I am having difficulty attaching the axle to the left side of the fork. I even tried to attach the axle to the fork without the wheel and the spacers and still was unable to screw it in on the left side. I hope I haven't damaged the threading. I just can't get everything to line up properly for a happy ending.

Time to stop & look. Study the start thread on the axle, same on the female thread. Once youve decided it Should thread up, take the axle only & put it in, turn it the wrong way till you feel it drop into the start thread, then screw it in.

Thanks justin_o_guy2. I will try that tomorrow. Both sides of the fork can't go out of alignment with each other for some reason, can they?

only the axle keeps them aligned.

I finally have a happy ending...First, and I don't know why I didn't try this earlier, I had to reattach the brake BEFORE reattaching the axle to the fork. That lined everything up and now I can enjoy the rest of the day!
