Can you buy a 18" rear wheel anywhere?
05/02/12 at 19:08:09

I want to upgrade to a 18" rear wheel. I know ryca sells the parts or will build it for you, but i want to keep the 15" wheel for aomething else.

Any wheels online that will fit?

I'm just looking for a regular spoked wheel like the stock front wheel.

18" won't fit unless you mod the swingarm which RYCA will do.
17" will fit if you use a low profile tire.

I thought the 18" fits with the tire ryca sells?

Look at the clearance between tire & swingarm where it pivots.

The rear tire RYCA uses is a 130/70H-18 with an outer diameter of 25.29", and it works without modifying the swingarm.  If you want to use the vintage looking tires they are taller and require the modification to the swingarm.

It might be a bit of a stretch - but if the rear sprocket from a GS550 fits the S40.....I wonder if the rear hub and wheel would fit as well?

Measure from axle to swingarm conflict point.

This is what I remember reading...the 18" setup with the Ryca tire will work, but anything much bigger will require the swingarm mod. I plan to just buy the Ryca tires most likely, so this won't be a problem.
I don't want to buy a wheel that doesn't fit as well as the stock hub....I can buy the parts and have it re-laced if I have to...just was wondering if there were any direct fit alternatives.

I remember seeing a thread on here about someone attempting to do gs550 wheels, or some sportbike mags, on the savage. Can't remember who that was. I would be so interested in such a mod if other people are willing to be the guinea pigs.  Grin

I took a look at the rear of my bike. I don't see where it would be such a problem to replace the whole rear wheel assembly with one from another bike, such as the often mentioned GS 550. The brake anti-twist arm is bolted to the left side of the swingarm. If the one from a donor bike was a little bit off don't think it would be a problem to do some minor adapting. Since many are using the GS550 sprockets to convert to chain drive anyway why not just use the whole 18  inch wheel and hub? The $$$$ for relacing, buying a rim and sprocket has gotta be a lot more than just buying a used wheel. Only bugaboo I can see is the left/right alignment of the chain. This could be adjusted by spacers. Spacer thickness could be also changed for left/right wheel alignment.

Looks like an exploratory trip to the junkyard is in order. What do you guys think?

Good idea to get the swingarm also.  Let's see,Ryca wants  $300 to redo your rear wheel to 18 inches plus let's say, 30 dollars for a sprocket, $150 for swingarm mod. Getting close to 5 bills for just the chain drive/18 inch change, and that doesn't even include the chain and front sprocket. Let's say 6 bills for a ballpark figure. But you do get a new tire in the deal.

How about stripping another bike, say a 450-550 for the whole ass end, swingarm, brake hardware, wheel, etc. AND the front sprocket and chain? That shouldn't be anywhere near the cost, even if one has to make custom swingarm bushings and spacers for the axle. I'll bet that the splines on the transmission are the same, even.  Width of the swingarm between the frame rails may be a problem. Make sure to get the pivot bolt and nut also from the donor bike.

If one is careful then he/she (PC police note) can pick out a good candidate and save on new chain/sprocket/tire costs. It would be worth it to take your time and find a nice bike say one that was in a wreck. After all, a lot of crashes are idiot cage drivers making left turns in front of bikers. Front forks and bodywork damage but back end should be good for parts. It would have to be an older bike with twin shocks, though brackets for shocks can be fabbed up.

Once it is running the details like gearing, new tire, brake adjustments, etc. can be sorted out. I would not try for disc brake setup for the rear, that is one too many changes. Would look cool, though.

Now where's that junkyard?
