Muffler question
04/28/12 at 17:59:54

I had an idea. I don't know if it would work. I was thinking of removing the stock muffler and putting a chrome exhaust tip from Pep Boys on there. Is that feasible? What size would I need? I know I would need to rejet the carb, but would I lose much bottom end power? Thanks.

If you're not an expert carb tuner... Don't even try it...

You'll lose a bunch of torque, and it'll run like crap...

Get a Dyna take-off ... Wink... easy tuning...

I was going to have a shop deal with the carb. The Dyna take off intrigues me, but so does a simple straight pipe.

Thanks! I appreciate the insight! I wish I could hear what it sounds like with a few holes drilled in the rear of the muffler. I can't seem to find any examples though.

Routy, any chance you can grab some audio of that? What size holes did you drill?

Routy, was a rejet needed after this was done and how far in did you drill these holes?

I can't do video, and hard to tell if it sounds similar or any different than any of those recorded. All I know is it is somewhat louder, but not bothersome to others.

The hole circle diameter @ 1.625 mite be kinda critical, as others that did this had trouble breaking bits because of something on the back side, I didn't have any problem @ 1.625. The holes only go thru the 3/16th thick plate. But I think I was careful to not go in much more to keep from striking anything inside.
I started w/ 3/16th holes, and ended w/ 5/16th holes. I think its just right for loudness, and I don't think it sounds bad either. Several have done this, most were pleased, but others weren't and made other mods.

I did not rejet, except for the white spacer mod that I had done before.
Stock jets....145 main, and I see no evidence of running lean. Others change to bigger jets before they ever touch the exhaust.

Could you point me in the direction of the white spacer mod please? I wouldn't mind doing that to my S40. I have a 2012 and am looking for a louder exhaust but I might try drilling (8) 5/16 holes like the gentlemen in the posting. Another question, I may sound dumb but how can I tell if my bike runs lean? Does anyone know what my stock jets are and maybe what I should upgrade them to?
