tranny question....
04/26/12 at 07:25:24

ok here it is im about to buy a 87 savage for a ryca build but i know those only have the 4 speed transmission. heres where my question comes in, how hard is it to make a 5 speed tranny work? how much does this swap usually cost? and is buying this bike (http://norfolk.craigslist.org/mcy/2974796522.html) worth it being that it is  just a 4 speed? plz help me out this is supposed to be my belated birthday present to myself lol. thanks guys and gals

Anything's possible... but, it's way more trouble than it's worth...

If you really want a 5spd, just find another bike...

....at 17k,.. this bike needs a camchain check and modded adjuster.
Good price though.

not really possible, you'd have to split the cases to get a new tranny in and there's differences in the cases so they just can't be swapped out.

Doing a tran swap is easy. Doing it without swapping the rest of the engine is really, really difficult.

I used to have a 4 speed in Nessy. She ran with the same top speed as she does now with the 5. So I wouldn't worry about the hwy. The biggest difference is that the gears are a lot longer.

I don't think it's worthless at all!!! I think everyone is saying that trying to swap to a 5 speed would be worthless.

A bike like that (& running for a price like that) are hard to find.

I think it would definitely be worth a look in person to make up my mind.  Cool

If you can find an affordable 5 speed,, get after it, but a 4 speed works fine, just gotta play with the decompression gizmo or be ready to use the trans & front brake when shutting it off to protect the starter gears from the engine bouncing the piston off of the compression & spinning backwards, bustin teeth,,

see i thought the same thing. ive just never owned my own motorcycle before, so i dont really know the differences between 4 speed and 5 speed. i mean obviously most likely top gear and highway cruising speed, but i dont wanna use it on the highway lol. so here is another question. what do u think about 4 speed with the ryca kit?

'87 for $650, not a bad price.
the 4spd will have the same top speed as a 5spd.
It's just not worth it to upgrade a 4spd to a 5spd one piece at a time.

just be aware that it's probably in need of a cam chain.
