oil pressure
04/24/12 at 16:37:45

i have 25 psi oil pressure at first start up.... then after a min or 2.5 my oil pressure starts jumping from 15 to 0 and it fluctuates for 3 min.... then i lose oil pressure.... what could cause this? where are my weak spots for this problem? Huh

You are measuring at the main gallery, right?

Oil pump itself is defective or the drive gear train is slipping/disconnecting.

If there was no anti-rotate pin inside the gear &  the flange washer you could get something like this.   As the clamp joint started to warm up some it would slip more and more and the oil pressure would decrease.

I would check the oil pump gear as OF said.

but also, pressure will be high when cold... and 25 is high cause the main release of pressure is the clearances between the cam and journals.  Tranny has a metering valve, so it won't be affected much by warming up.  then there's the crank, not sure how oil is metered thru there.

typical hot idle pressure is about 5psi.

how low is your rpm?  should be 10 to 12 hundred.

I tuned by ear so the oil pump would whine then raise the rpm about 100 to 300 rpms.... i figure guessing it should be around 1150 to 1300.... i have run 8 quarts of oil through and my oil is still dark but it is getting transparent little by little.... my bike runs awesome far more power than it has ever had...

I dunno -- normal fluxuation down with oil viscosity warm up would be normal enough but not 15 down to zero then back up again and down again and up again -- then going to NOTHING after 3 minutes ....

Could it be his metering gage isn't up to the task?  Didn't he say he was using a compression tester?

Oh, the entire clutch basket is what you mean  -- he must be taking the basket out of the way then taking the oil pump gear off of it and driving the bare shaft from the clutch basket area of the right side.

Or something .... ?????   what exactly, I dunno what   ?????

yep i have had the clutch basket off.... and OF yes i was running the oil pump the gear off...  and VERS it sounds like a pulsing oil pump.... not sure how to describe it other than a pulsating whine.... i can take the rocker arm covers off and drop the rpms and have no oil spraying out but hear this sound... i have heard it several times when i have had idle too low

Now im running it fully assembled.... it might be a seal or gasket... trying to find a guage that will read 50 psi.... my 200 psi guage is too strong for my bike and not accurate enough for me...
