Lowering shocks?
04/24/12 at 15:26:56

I did a search and am having a hard time coming up with shocks to lower the rear end of a Savage. There is a lot of space between the fender and the tire that I would like to eliminate without going to a bobber style fender. I can find solid struts, but that doesn't seem very comfy or safe for someone "of size". I did find something on cutting the springs, but I didn't want to go that route either. Any suggestions?

...not much to play with from the stock shocks... maybe 2 or 3" inches total travel... 1" of that is taken up when you sit down... That leaves 2" to play with... really want to make it only 1"?...
For someone "of size"... I think you need at least what you got...

If you want more than an inch,.. you better go to struts...

lower the fender, add spacers.

shock travel is about 1 and a half... I wouldn't want to shorten that.

That's a good idea,... keep your travel, and close the gap...
You get the look you want, and keep the minimal comfort the stockers give...

If you want to get a little fancy, you could re-mount the rear fender to the swingarm so that it fits snug against the rear wheel, but travels up and down with it. That way you can keep the suspension where it is, but it will require some creative fabricating.

That's what we are doing with my Roadster project; although that's a totally different kind-a bike. I'm not sure quite what that would look like on a stock Savage, but you might get a cool kind of Soft-tail Bobber look to it....

You would definitely loose the passenger seat, since that sits directly on the rear fender, and there's no frame under there at all. (That really amazed me when we first tore my Savage apart...)

I think the idea of lowering the fender makes the most sense. I will look at some options there. Attaching it to the swingarm looks promising. I just need to see how that would look. Thanks guys! You are all awesome!
