New Savage owner, anyone wanna help a girl out?
04/21/12 at 08:47:19

Hey guys, I've purchased a 1988 Savage and it's quite the "project".
It was 120 bucks, so I figured at least it would be fun to tear apart and learn on.

I have one quick question about the front pulley. I don't have a large enough tool to break that nut free. The schematics I see online are telling me it's a 20mm, but the 20mm just doesn't appear large enough.

Does anyone know what size that nut is?

Thanks in advance!

It's a 32mm...

Try to borrow a gorilla, or an impact wrench... They don't come off easy...
Huh...

I've got a CBR1000RR as a daily driver, this is more of a complete tear down and rebuild type of project. At this point I have no idea if it will even turn over. The original owner parked it in 2006 when it was running..then it sat outside this entire time.

Even if it turns out the engine is trash I figure the frame and title alone is worth what I have in it.  Cool

Thanks very much! I was expecting that, every nut on this sucker is a workout! I guess thats a good sign, that no ones been wrenching on it til me.

Now that I'm looking at it, I guess I should just drop the back wheel and take it apart that way.

I've also noticed the flange on that front pulley looks all outta sorts, like someone was attempting to straigten or thin it out. That might be a problem later.

As of right now, I have the seat, tank, controls, carb, and wiring harness completely off the bike. My goal is to remove the engine and bring it to my dad, who lives a couple states over. It's on the lift, do you suggest I remove the back wheel and go at it that way?

I'm 37 and been riding since I was 5...but this is my first project so any help is certainly appreciated.

HEY KELLY!

Welcome aboard! I have to say, $120 beats my $250 Savage, and I though THAT was a steal; of course, mine was running at the time...
These bikes rarely got ridden hard, and rarely got wrenched on too much. The PO has obviously kind-a/sort-a bobered it, but I doubt that engine's ever been touched; What's the mileage say?
As long as the engine was sealed up tight and didn't get any water down inside, that thing may yet surprise you! A good carb cleaning and some elbow grease might be al it takes to fire it up. I've seen worse...

Tell us what your plans are for this one...
My build project is in my signature....

If you're gonna' pull the engine,.. that front pulley has to come off...

... but,. like Tea says,.. you might just try getting it running first.  Internals may be okay...

Congratulations Kelly

If you got a clear title with it you got your moneys worth.

The SAE size would be 1 1/4 "  .

keep us posted on your "getting it on the road" project.

Someone on the brake while someone works on breakin that nut loose could be a help, an impact would make life a lot easier.
No impact? a CHEATER & A HAMMER IS THE NEXT BEST THING.

oops, caplox, sorry.

The front brakes were seized when I got it..so after pushing it like that across 200 feet of dirt my first project was to break those loose to move it easier. Looks like a hammer is in my future!

Be aware the cheater will flex down & spring up, hard. A foot instead of a hand will be a lot less painful & dont hit right on the end. Hit down close to where the cheater meets the handle of the breaker bar, if you have one, or ratchet, if you dont & dont hit between the nut & where the end of the ratchet is, because that will flip the breaker into your hand or foot & do little to spin the nut,

& if all you have is a 1 pound hammer,, get a bigger hammer in your life,
You can get a 4 pound for cheap nowadays..
