Cause of "surging"?
04/19/12 at 15:07:19

My '96 Savage had been running pretty well intil about a month ago.  No recent changes to coincide with the problem, so my question is this... What could cause surging? At 3/4 throttle and above the problem begins.

Current set-up: 152.5 main jet, 55 pilot, white spacer mod, Jardine muffler.

Thanks,

Dave

First question from anyone will be did you try it on "Prime" ?
That will tell a lot.
Also, does one notch out on the choke help or hurt it ?

Check the plug in the vacuum tap... may be leaking air...
If not that,... I'd guess a sticky slide...

Quite a revolting development ! Raptorizing is supposed to fix everything ! Roll Eyes

Obviously,.....starving for fuel.
First I'd check the main line fuel flow,....fuel filter, screen in petcock etc.
If main line fuel flow to the carb is good, you are looking into the carb main jet area.....ect. Maybe drain the bowl......hope some floating debris come out.
Some would say,..."if it won't go, Seafoam it!"

Later, install fuel filter if not already.

Raptorizing allows most people full relief instantly, and the problems don't come back later to haunt them.

The very few folks who have other issues with carbs full of crap or tanks full of crap repeatedly passing it on to the carb, they can now readily recognise their remaining issues once the Raptor removes all the muddy water from the system (without the built-to-fail vac petcock"s  multiple symptoms screwing up every attempt at diagnosis).

A large pleated paper fuel filter is a good thing to have on your bike -- prevents a whole world of little carb screw ups over the years.

Take your air filter out completely and run the bike a quick trip down the road to see if the symptom disappears.   Avoid dust clouds while you do this, obviously.

A really buttfugly plugged up stock air filter can cause some surging too.

====================

But then again, we do have at least two folks who LIKE the vac petcock.

And they certainly will lose no opportunity to say "I told you so" if a bike has new issues that can be recognized now that the vac sucker is gone.

Why?  I dunno.    All bikes get new symptoms and new issues as the miles build up.   It is what the bikes do.

I just don't care for fixing the SAME SET OF ISSUES repeatedly.  Me, I prefer to remove them permanently rather than deal with them again and again.

Grin    sending them in to look for the little spider doing pushups on the main jet again, aren't we?

Thanks all for the replies.  Got the tank off, pulled the petcock, found a bunch of flaky rust/crap.  Should get to cleaning it out today, maybe tomorrow, then a new fuel filter.
