Exploding Oil Filter Cover? Cool..

Verslagen 1 or....
Only one week on this Forum...and I've already gotten my 'Whoa' fix...

About the Pic in OilChangeTime thread with the Oil Filter Cover knocked to smithereens.. Did it occur because the Torque on the cover's Allen-head bolts exerted pressure on the filter face due to the Back-assward filter? Or was there an internal pressure issue I can't fathom that induced an Unplanned Catastrophic Event? Swell pic BTW  Locomotiveman

Think of it as loading a bullet in a gun backwards, except this time when the engine starts up the to 50-80 pounds per square inch of oil pressure sets the round off and it blows the cover into pieces.

How many square inches in that cover?  6-8"2 X 80 psi?   How many foot pounds of torque times 3 fasteners worth of pre-load?  It all adds up, don't it?

Yup, they pop like a champagne cork.

They pop when Mikey does it at the dealership too.    'Cept then they say "your cover was flawed" from some sort of impact and they want you to pay to buy a new one.

And then by golly Mikey puts it in the exact same way one more time yet again .....  (he's got dyslexia looking at them exploded diagrams, he does)

Pop goes the weasel ...

If the loads are above a certain threshold, microscopic cracks will begin to form at the surface. Eventually a crack will reach a critical size, and the structure will suddenly fracture. The shape of the structure will significantly affect the fatigue life; square holes or sharp corners will lead to elevated local stresses where fatigue cracks can initiate. Round holes and smooth transitions or fillets are therefore important to increase the fatigue strength of the structure.

OK ..so the pressurized oil blew the cover account it had no exit account the filters's backside essentially blocked the oil's prompt return? I first conjured a now-too-long filter inside the cover with the Allen-head bolts tightened to be-Jesus values against this back assward filter.
I saw a somewhat similar Crankcase overpressure scenario launch a Locomotive engine's connecting rod/piston/Head into the heavens. It fell to Earth thru the roof of a house alongside the tracks. Unintended Catastrophic Events....Fun stuff. Thanks Locomotiveman

Too G**darn funny. I like how the 'Blast Trajectory' of the oil splatter was blocked by the frying pans on the wall.
I'll keep MY Rotella T in the cases...thank-you.
Nice day for a ride to the VFW for a brewski...no snow...no explosions. Locomotiveman
