Backfires between shifts
04/03/12 at 20:53:43

Have 2002 Savage with stock carb and stock Harley sportster muffler. I have adjusted the idle mixture screw out and taken half of the white spacer out. I have no more backfires on deceleration, but between shifts it still makes a little pop. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Do I need to do some re-jetting because of the muffler change?
Thanks,
DJ

Thots ??
If I didn't have any backfire on my Savage, and I couldn't fix it myself, I'd guess I'd have to have a shop at least try to fix it ! Undecided

Or didn't you know that a correct running Savage is well known for backfiring ? Shocked

It might help to idle it up a little bit.

When I used the Mikuni carb, I found a slightly more open pilot helped that.

Mine has less than 100 miles on the odometer and I do believe it has backfired (guessing) 25 times. Neat.

[Update] At just over 200 miles the amount of backfires seem to have slowed way down.  Angry

I had the carb rejeted, K and N filter, Harley muffler, valves adjusted. Runs great. Pops between shifts. Live with it. Rejet the carb. Your bike will love you for it.

If you are anywhere near 2.5-3 turns out on your pilot screw then go up to the next larger pilot jet, turn the pilot screw back down to 1 turn out and retune for the best/highest rpm...the point where if you go in or out the rpm decreases.  That's called the SWEET SPOT.  After you find it then use the idle adjusting screw to set the idle rpm back to 1100 rpm
