Powder coating is essentially melted plastic, which can remelt at high temperatures. I sent the pipes from my other bike to Jet-Hot. http://www.jet-hot.com/ There are some areas that look rough because this was a salvaged pipe with some rust pitting.

Quite true, but using BBQ paint from Home Depot won't hold up very long no matter how good the prep. Anything that will hold up under the red hot heat of an exhaust header, and then contract enough to stay stuck when the pipe gets cold, has to be pretty good stuff. It ain't cheap.
