I wouldn't suggest making your own bars, 1'' drag in any finish are just to cheap. Keeping them from banging the tank means a new stop or risers, which to me risers defeat the purpose of drag bars. Stops are simple you just cant use the fork lock in MOST cases.
Here's my high-tech stop, it mounts under the headlamp housing. 18 ga was the thickness I needed.

Keeps the bars off the tank nicely.

Looking nice, you do some great work.
What are you running for an exhaust?

I can make ya up a stop no problem, they mount under the head lamp and use the same bolts, I'll send you a PM and we can sweat the details.

I was running a dyna but the smaller slash cut will work around my mid controls better.

Found this muffler at the salvage yard. It has harley davidson stamped into it, if you rotate the slash cut out you'll see the logo. Someone here found the same one on ebay and had the part no.

You shouldn't have any problem with the gasket just taking the header off to wrap it.....you'l know if it's leaking...
