Do you have a Clymers manual?   We have one available for download here.

http://www.suzuki-savage.ru/index.php/images/Download/Service_Manual_Clymer.zip

Don't be put off by the language, the manual is in English so look for the Clymers manual at the bottom of the page, click on it and wait for the dialog box to jump up, tell it you want to download the PDF manual, tell it where and then wait 5-10 minutes for it to finish writing itself to your hard drive.

You cannot "view" the manual -- it is way too too big to do that.  You must download your own personal copy to your hard drive.   And that takes TIME, like 10 minutes or more.   It will tell you when it is finished.

The ring gap you are describing is way too too big.   Assuming the ring is new this sounds almost like a stock ring in a first over bore.

Did you "square" the ring up using the top of the piston inserted from the bottom of the bore?
(enclosed piston forces the ring to sit flat and square)

I don't know the specs of the thumper, but .021 sounds like a whole bunch too much for a ring gap.

GASP !!!!

Justin, surely you jest !!!

Suzuki, screw up?   Never !!!

well, apart from the Suzuki oil check method, the "tune your clutch" by using different pushrods, using a flat tappet engine in the 2012 SAE class SN oil era while insisting (correctly, BTW) that SF oil should be used, putting a vac petcock on an engine with insufficient vacuum to reliably operate it at all speeds, not vibration mounting the speedo well enough to stop the rattles, leaning out the engine past all rational thought in an attempt to meet CAFE standards, and last, but not least ............

I like that you have printed out your manual -- now you can go here and mark in red ink all the screw ups that are in that manual so YOU don't have to relearn them all the hard way (like we did).
