Do you have a Clymers manual? We have one available for download here.
http://www.suzuki-savage.ru/index.php/images/Download/Service_Manual_Clymer.zipDon't be put off by the language, the manual is in English so look for the Clymers manual at the bottom of the page, click on it and wait for the dialog box to jump up, tell it you want to download the PDF manual, tell it where and then wait 5-10 minutes for it to finish writing itself to your hard drive.
You cannot "view" the manual -- it is way too too big to do that. You must download your own personal copy to your hard drive. And that takes TIME, like 10 minutes or more. It will tell you when it is finished.
The ring gap you are describing is way too too big. Assuming the ring is new this sounds almost like a stock ring in a first over bore.
Did you "square" the ring up using the top of the piston inserted from the bottom of the bore?
(enclosed piston forces the ring to sit flat and square)
