Savage CHOP update
03/28/12 at 14:57:19

Here's my 96 bobber chop.  Aftermarket tank, t-bars, handmade sissybar, trailer fender, 2.5" dia harley fishtail, no air filter, hard struts, bare bones electric (lights, spark, charger, starter) solo seat on two trailer leaf springs bolted to the backbone.

on a run this weekend.  no head or piston work done yet and keeping pace with Dynas.  Cool

If you don't like it, I don't care.

I'm having upload issues, but here is a picture of the tank mount and one of the two leafs being test fit.

Front tank mount: Nut welded over hole in backbone
Rear tank mount: Metal bridged over frame, nut welded on top over hole (not yet installed in pciture)
Spring leaf mounts: two nuts welded over holes in backbone

Words of warning:
  • the leaf springs were drilled out for the bolts... a process which takes hours and multiple drill sharpening sessions with a grinder.  This stuff is real tough.  A plasma cutter would be nice
  • The backbone of the savage is weak.  The rear spring seat mounting nut is pushed downward by the weight of the rider and caused the square tube to bend in.  I've cut that out and welded in a 2x thicker plate across the two round tubes.

The springs are 1 3/4" wide and 9/16" thick and actually give some great suspension and virtually no rolling side-to-side. I'm only 150 lbs so all I need is two springs. If I had more clearance over the carb, I might shorten the helper spring just a bit to get more preload.

Yeah, I'm done! I moved to Culver City and working freelance in TV/Film... plenty of time to wrench!

You'll need to have 3 springs, reinforce the square backbone, a tank with a high channel, and a lot of time to drill  Grin
