Is is better to do this with the bike on the jack or on the ground, or does it even matter?

Thanks Serow.. the clymers says on the lift but I figured it was more in place torqued on the ground.. just got my chain conversion done and I'm trying to work out the kinks and get it smooth as possible.. I hadda grind off the belt gaurd brackets because my chain was eating into it going up and down hills aha
