I was riding down I5 doing about 75 for 20 or so miles when all of the sudden I felt a cut of power and if felt like my bike was running on bubbles.

A few seconds after the cut in power, I got a surge of power followed by multiple consecutive backfires. Being a new ride, this freaked me out big time, so I threw on the blinker and made it to the shoulder.

After hitting around 50 or so the problem seemed to correct itself, so I maintained that speed and hit the exit. Parked. Looked for any noticeable damage or anything that would cause this, but nothing.

I started it back up to see how it sounded, all normal. Put it in gear and made it to my destination.

Upon filling up for my return home i noticed that my foam air filter was soaked with fuel. After filling up i could not maintain idle with petcock set to run, but when i switched to reserve everything was fine.

Sorry for the novel, but any ideas on what could be the problem?

Been at both ends and quite a bit of what's in between but prefer PCH 101 to I-5 for the section it covers.  At least the last time I rode any of it, back in the 80's.

the whole idea of a cv carb was saftey no suck no fuel flow we are morons they got to put a sticker on the tank of the bike to tell use not to drink and ride!!!
we cant remember to turn the thingy off after riding..
(funny thumperclone has no reserve(no petcock) just in line off and on, only time i turn to off is when shes on the bumper rack headin to the hills..8 years no stuck float no probs at all from a chinesse clone of a honda ct 70..

now let a bike (or other rubber) sit for prolonged periods the rubbers are goin to rot.. ask any camper trailer owner..tread on the tires dont wear they rot

If the fuel continues to flow after being shut off, your float valve must be sticking or is in need of adjustment... switching to a raptor petcock will NOT fix this problem anyways!

So, here is my suggestion for how he should proceed to fix his issues.    It is very clear, has safety notes and has everything he needs in wonderfully excruciating detail -- including putting the screws and the mounting bracket back (although you don't plan to reuse it) "because it is nice to know where it is" when it comes time to decide not to remove it because you can't use it and don't need it.    (?????)

Just a warning to Hero,... if you don't want go Raptor...  you can run on Prime, but block the vacuum line... It's very important.   Otherwise, fuel will still leak down that line...
You will lose reserve, and turning to on or reserve will be unreliable as a shut-off, but the bike will run when set to prime setting...

 
Now, Routy and Verslagen will be happy to help you rebuild that sucker.  
They do it kinda like the Bionic Man, spend about 7 large and make him better and stronger and faster.  

Only problem is about 3-7 years after the 7 large is spent, Arnold Schwarzenegger peels back the skin on his face and says " I told you I would be back, now I am BACK !!"

(the same problems you are having now will reoccur because they are inherent to the construction of the vac petcock unit)

So far, no issues have recurred associated with the raptor petcock replacement other than the occasional  float valve malfunctions which happen completely independent of the petcock (but that are supposedly covered by a properly working vac petcock unit when the bike isn't running .....  but then they flat drive you nuts when it is running anyway)

Without the vac petcock on the scene to muddy up the waters, the stuck/leaking float valve shows itself very clearly the first time and gets fixed.
