Aint doing it right....
03/18/12 at 15:18:25

I had noticed that i didnt have the upper end umph i had last season... Figgured it was time to adjust the valves... Long story short an hours later my valves sound like they are tinney and clacking away. Now what i had done is use
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1278347767/0#0
To find TDC
and used
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1325991352
to adjust the valves... Only question i have is HOW in the world do i know when its Exhaust Stroke TDC and Intake Stroke TDC? ? Im thinkin thats where is screwed up...

If you were cranking the timing bolt CCW,.. as my post says... when you feel the intake rockers go down, you are on the intake downstroke, the next one coming as the intake rockers come back up and the timing mark lines up, and  will be the compression stroke..

Did you go clockwise?... Huh...

No i have a 4 way that has a 17mm and used it, what i did was go CCW and watched it both on the intake when i did them and the exhaust when i did them so if i understand it. I was watching them drop then when TDC mark was at the notch go ahead and adjust, what i noticed is that after putting them to .004" that when i went to rotate CCW to TDC a couple times that they would be off again after the 3rd attempt they stayed in spec...

Wonder what in the world i did wrong then?

I'm not sure... it sounds like you were at TDC on the compression stroke...

Have you adjusted valves on any engine before?...
Are you certain that you got the feeler in the right place?..
Are you certain that you didn't accidentally had two feelers stuck together?... (..and I ask this from personal experience  Grin)...

Hey it dont hurt to ask as you wernt here to see what id dun. Yeah ive adjusted many a valve just not on a bike. So im wondering if i got them too loose as the exhaust sounds waaay different. Ill give it a shot again tomorrow.... maybe have a different change.

LoL nah i had all three feelers out from 003 to 005 and sepearated.

Now on the exhaust side it is the same as the intake side right?
Im watchin for the valves to drop and then follow to TDC on the mark...

Hey wait... Do you do both intake valves at the same time ?  and exhaust valves at the same time ?

Thanks for the help!

Just to be sure, I remove the spark plug and use a wooden dowell to determine when it's on compression by piston position.

If you didnt bend the feeler gauge to sit flat between valve tip & rocker adjuster, you adjusted onto a .004 inch feeler, at an angle,, Could that be it? No need to do anything extreme, just get it on TDC, pop an access port & grab a rocker & lift & push, you should know if its not even close to .004.

I think im on to something.....

My rocker arms have no free play at TDC.... I remember now how tight they were...

Could that be a decomp solidnoid thing ? Should i adjust that first ?

Adding to my thoughts and issues...

Just checked the decomp solinoid and it measured 4.77mm on Compression TDC.

While on compression TDC i noticed that the exhaust rocker arms have ALOT of play. The Intake Rocker arms have NONE...

Its OK, took me adjusting my valves about 3-4 times before I was comfortable that they had been done right.
