I'm putting in a new cylinder head cap seal on the "new" to me savage.  I decided I might as well retourqe the cylinder head nuts while I was at it.  I just took them off and am wishing I had just left them alone.  They were nice and tight.  Here's the question.  All 4 studs wiggle in their hole a bit.  They don't come out-just wiggle.  Is this normal or did I just break all 4 studs?

Mine were all tight (88, 96, and 01)

How much thread do you have above the nut?

Can't see how much thread above the nut with those cap nuts.  I'm talking about when the nut is off- the threaded studs could all be wiggled back and forth a bit in their holes.

I didn't dissassemble that far.  Just took the head cover off to do the cap seal and torque the head bolts.  Bought the bike with an oil leak and I'm just covering all the bases. If those bolts are really long that would explain it.  The dirt bike engines I've dug into before are very different.

Double nut the stud and tighten it down, then remove the double nuts and torque the factory nut back on...

I think its fine- the studs weren't loose.  I now realize they are very long bolts that come up through slightly over size holes in the head and when the nuts are off they can wiggle back and forth - like a tree trunk in the wind.  Don't think I was describing my question very clearly.  There isn't room on the exposed threads to fit 2 nuts or I would check the tightness of those studs.  I think I'm moving in to the camp that says if there isn' t a problem don't mess with those things.
