yamaha xs wheel conversion
03/04/12 at 11:06:17

I wanted mag wheels and don't really like the look of the Suzuki wheels but love the look of the Yamaha XS mags.... so I did some home work and found that we can use a set of mags from a 76-78 xs500.  Not as easy to find as the 650's but they are out there.  Spacers might still be needed but the axle specs are the same.  I am beginning my search for a set of wheels to do this conversion and remember the question of whether the Yamaha mags were an option has come up before so I thought I would share.

XS500
front axle: 17mm
rear axle: 17mm

LS650
front axle: 15mm
rear axle: 17mm

Until you actually do this mod, should go in RSD

Remember,.. you'll have to work out the front brake rotor/caliper mounting and rear sprocket/pulley drive and brake linkage...

According to what I found the xs500 refrenced has a 15mm front axle not a 17mm.  My info came from a post I found on dotheton.com.  as for the spacing and brakes, yes it will require some finessing, but this is the closest possibilty for non suzuki mags I have been able to find if my axle info is correct.

I hope you're right, I like em too.   Cool

front tire is same, rim is 1.85x19, 6 bolt pattern on disk.

rear haven't found sizes yet, but rear disk is all I could find.

My info comes from a list that was on the ozzie choppers forum, so I can't confirm one way or the other.

I believe they are alloy.

Did some further searching.....you're right, my info was not.  I did find that we can use the wheel from a xs400.  I checked this in a few places......so hopefully this info is correct!  Sorry for the confusion, and my mistaken info.

To clarify, according to what I can find, we can use the front mag from a 77-81 xs400 and rear from a 76-78 xs500. Spacing, brakes, etc will need to be worked out once I have the wheels to mock up.  I am determined to make this happen, if I find success I will certainly post.

For what it is worth, the bigger sized XS series bikes (750, 850, 1100) all use the same steering stem bearing size (not sure about steering stem *length* though).

A full front end swap is something I've been mulling over in my head for a while. Just kind of waiting for the parts to drop into my lap for cheap before i start investing all sorts of dinero into that project though.

Where have you been getting your info from? I found a .pdf document through the Ohio Cafe Racers that lists what seems to be all the steering stem bearing sizes from early 70's to '02 or so.

I pulled info from dotheton.com. xs650.com, xs400.com, various google searches and my buddy has two xs750's I have access to.  After the initial egg on my face I checked a couple of sources before claiming anything in my last post!

I looked at the possibly of a full front end swap from an xs750 so I could  get dual disks, etc.  That front end is heavy....really heavy and for us, dual disks isn't a must.  I started to be concerned about how handling would turn out so scrapped that idea for now.

Also, the smaller bikes have an 18 inch front wheel where the bigger bikes have a 19.  I think for the savage I would go with the 18.

Thanks for the link, very helpful for a lot of people I'm sure.

I think it'd be nice to have cast wheels but I'd also like to be able to keep the belt drive.

I thought the 80's gs550 series rear wheel did that? mated up such that you could keep the belt drive...
