Squeaky drum brake...
02/25/12 at 08:02:28

So my drum brake is squeaky when stopping pressure is applied.. since I've never taken it apart I was wondering if there was any quick fix for this without dis-assembly, such as spraying brake cleaner into it or something off the wall like that...

Thanks

If you can't take it apart, then there's only one way to fix it.
use it, get it hot enough to drive off all moisture and it'll stop squealing.

So you mean spray it down with brake cleaner and get it hot?

how do you intend to spray brake cleaner in there if you don't take it apart?

not a good plan, you'll end up glueing the dirt to the drum.

When my brakes start squeaking I hit them hard to warm them up. Seems to fix it...for a little while anyway.

I went through this problem last year. Nothing I did would stop the squeek, until I replaced the shoes. I roughed up the inside of the drum, where the shoe contacts the drum, with emery cloth while it was apart. I also roughed up the new shoes with the emery cloth. And I beveled the leading and trailing edges of the new shoes, just to be sure. Even now, it still squeeks a little when I 1st go out. 2 or 3 hard stops and it goes away.

I see no other way to fix this problem without taking it apart, unfortunately.
