I had a '78 SR500 and they seem to be equal in performance, but the SR was a little quicker handling since the LS has a bit more rake out front. That can be changed though with taller shocks that raise the rear and effectively quickens steering.
I do like the forward control setup on the LS because it is more comfortable riding. Of course, being older now is a factor too.

It is a sexy bike to be sure. I had one for about a year but could never get the 2 carb setup to work properly, even after rebuilding 2 complete sets.
There is info out there for doing a single carb conversion but after getting the 1 into 2 manifold for it and checking fitment with a Mikuni VM carb, turns out a more complex setup is required; including moving the oil tank from mid-frame to a side tank position.
The model I had was an early kickstart only version, and that on top of the carb issues made me decide to sell and refocus on the LS650's.
If you do get one be sure it is in PERFECT running condition.
