Saddlebag question
02/07/12 at 17:15:18

I would like to install saddlebags on my 1999 thumper and would like some suggestions.

I do not want to make modifications to the lights but would like to install  decent size bags at a fair price.

Also, does anyone have a good alternative to the overpriced saddlebag mounts?

Thanks!

I don;t have saddlebag mounts with my particular bags and I have never had a problem.  I have some slanted saddleman bags, they were on the bike when I got it and the lights were not moved (of course, I had to move them).  They will hold a couple of gallons each.  I like them.

I've been away from the site for a while and only recently returned, so I don't know exactly where they are, but there are at least a couple of threads where folks have made their own saddlebag supports.

Somebody cut the connector strap between the bags & loosened the side rails & slipped the edge of the strap up in there & tightened the side rail down on it,, or screwed somethng to the rail,, anyone remember that install? I thot it was elegant.

I think that was it but it's difficult to tell since the photos posted by Michael M. Phillips (MMP) are no longer accessible.  Here are a couple from the RSD forum that have been done while I was away that I just found on a search.  They're not what I'd seen before but are quite interesting.

Saddleman or similar bags with the rigid internal bag plate, usually plastic sandwiched between 2 layers (or more) of vinyl. River Road are also decent off the rack generic semi-rigid bags.

My bags are mounted with long through bolts, go through bag, bag support and rear fender. BUT, I deep sixed the side rails (member Max Morley has them) and stock fender/lights (county landfill) years ago. Bags are mounted on 1.5"x3" (roughly) reclaimed Malaysian mahogany. Even at full throttle my Saddleman slants don't get sucked into the fender. And that is without a connecting yoke over the fender.

If you are worried about being cosmetically "proper", slant bags are a must for bikes with exposed rear shocks. If you want function, avoid slant bags, regular bags are easier to load/unload and tend to hold more.

With stock fender rails and lights, a SMALL bag is almost too big. Suzuki used to make saddlebags that fit it, but they are tiny...

Oh, don't buy Willie and Max bags if you plan to use them everyday, the stitching sucks. Great bag material, cheap thread. I had to roll the front seam on my set in and add a stiffening welt. VN800A, 44K miles in 18 months, bags used daily.

Arteacher,

I like the way the bags look!   I guess I should plan on investing around $ 200 for supports and bags.

I see alot of great ideas posted on this thread but I do not know if I have the time to build my own supports.

Sorry, mine are "regular" slant, not small.
