Bobber progress so far

Finally got time to head out to the garage and get some work done. First I measured out the length for my struts with some agile footwork with the bike lift to get the right height. Ended up with a 8.5" from the inside measurement. We have a local shop named "Metal cut to length" which conveniently was down the street.$ 22.50 for 2 1" round stock with 9/16" holes, 10.75" long.

After mounting those I mocked up where I wanted the Northern Tool fender, and that's where I found something interesting. It seems that my frame horns aren't centered over my tire. I'm not sure if this is from the bike being laid down from the previous owner or if it's normal. So i had to eyeball the fender on the tires instead of the frame and it was about a half inch off center. Oh well. Drilled holes, popped some bolts into it and rolled it out for some photos before I take them all off again for finish grinding and paint prep Cheesy

I'm not against grinding off the frame horns but I'm not sure how well the fender will mount to the frame afterwards or how much to cut off. I tried trolling around on the forum for photos via google images "Site:suzukisavage.com fender" but most of them are unavailable Sad

Still looking for that perfect seat too. I don't like the stock pan but till I get the spring mounts and a seat it'll have to do. It's a long way till it's everyday riding weather so I have time.

Any advice on the frame situation or why my tire isn't centered on the bike would be great Cheesy

California Gender:	Re: Bobber progress so far Reply #1 - 01/30/12 at 10:58:44 Check that you have the spacers on the correct side, big one on the left fit's in a hole tightly, right one is a smaller diameter. Also, I see that your belt is tracking to the right. I always adjust this to be in the center to reduce the chance of chirping.

Unless you're going to mount the fender to the swingarm, cutting off the horns is probably not the best way to go.

I didn't even think about the spacers. I'll check that tomorrow when it's light outside. I'm not surprised that it's tracking differently since I changed the height. I had to adjust it earlier because it was too tight.

I would much rather put it on the swingarm but I don't have access to a welder to do it properly. That'll be further down the road.

The frame horns on mine were never centered. And with the shock offset on the left for belt clearance...

My rear fender is mounted via a left-over 1970s Jammer headlight mounting bracket. And it WILL pivot in the mount if I don't have a support from the exhaust tip to the muffler (VN800 reflector bracket for now). It will be a moving fender (think Kawasaki Drifters) later this spring... Of course, I run a full fender (FLH, Shovelhead era). And a seat based on the stock pan.

Low end bike, don't expect nice welds or perfectly straight fittings. Or fully welded brackets. Do expect the shifter linkage to bend and/or snap (pot metal).

Looks good so far.

Sprung seat that fits? K-model and early Ironhead Sportster spec, the one from V-Twin Mfg is just right, spring mounts are the same width as your stock seat mounting tabs. Make a cover for the top of the frame, Savage electrical parts are NOT water tight.

If you look closely enough you can JUST see the fender mounts, maybe...

California Gender:	Re: Bobber progress so far Reply #9 - 02/05/12 at 15:47:30 1st check the belt tension, 90° twist method preferred next loosen the rear axle then lift the rear end and put her in neutral spin the wheel and watch the belt tighten the side the belt tracks to or loosen the opposite side to get it to track in the middle then repeat spinning the wheel the opposite way.

And if you look at the top mounting holes(towards the back of the frame rails)I usually run about a half inch spacer(on a rigid) to get the fender spaced good all the way around the tire.
