Gas puddling below bike
01/30/12 at 06:24:04

Haven't driven my 98 in 3-4 days, went outside to crank it up last night. Pulled the choke out, fired up...so I walked away and let it run. Came back to push choke back in and let it idle and there was a puddle of gas below the bike. Shut it down, inspected where it was coming from....couldn't really pin point the problem but it's somewhere in the area of the meeting of carb/air filter. Took everything I could off, check the airbox, no gas in there. Started bike back up with things off, no gas leak.

Went to start it for work this morning (daily driver, btw) puddle of gas again. Didn't move the choke this time. Started looking on here saw someone mention tapping the carb and moving the petcock. Did both and no gas leak again. Rode into work, and could definitely tell a difference in the way it was riding, A LOT more backfiring than normal.

Any one have an idea? I thought about just rush ordering a new carb, as I work a ton, and have no other transportation.

Any gas in your oil? Does it only leak when running at idle?

Can't say exactly what the problem is...
but your leak start after start up... so not petcock
I'd say you're in need of either a new float valve or your float needs adjusting.
Or may just need a good cleaning.
carbs are way too expensive just to replace at least IMHO.
a $20 or $30 carb kit and a can of carb cleaner is all you need.

and check you vac line for gas.

I didn't see any gas when I just went and checked by opening the oil fill.

I'm hoping that I can get away with just the carb kit and the cleaner. Problem for me is, it has a harley pipe, and a K&N airfilter, so I have no idea what size jets were used or anything.

I can fix most anything, when it's fuel injected...never worked on a carb. Where is the best place to find a carb kit? And do I need to worry about what size the jets are for that?

Run some Sea Foam in your gasoline it will clean and lube your carb.

Do the easiest test first...
Check the vacuum line going from the back of the petcock to the right side of the carb for the presence of fuel.. (should be absolutely none in that line)...
If you find gas in there,.. read this thread...
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1251932429/1

If there is no fuel in that line,... it's definitely your carb float system...

NOTE... even when the fuel leak happens only when the engine is running,... it can be the petcock... small tears in the diaphragm don't leak until vacuum is applied... then they gush....

Yes, from what I can tell it all looks pretty intact. Was just talking to a buddy and he said the choke may have pulled out too far and caused excess gas to flow through. May just have to take it to a mech in the morning to see at this point. But I will be trying the petcock and pulling it down to see exactly where it's leaking from

my guess is a float level issue.

depending on how in a rush you are to fix this, you can try the easiest method first, which (and i hate to admit this) would be running through the carb with some cleaner like seafoam.

i had a similar issue with one of my other bikes that resulted in my girlfriend's leg being doused in gasoline at 50mph (and she hasn't been back on since Sad ) and it turned out the floats had sprung a leak.

carb kits... i'm not sure where to pick them up or what comes in them. gaskets maybe? maybe a float valve? anywho, if you can spare the time, i wouldn't buy one until you know you need one (e.g. you've discovered beyond a reasonable doubt the source of your problem).

if you have more time, you could rig up a float level checker (clear plastic tubing tied up to the bowl drain) and see what levels are while the bike is running (hint: they shouldn't be higher than the bowl is itself).

i've never heard of a choke lever causing gas to run backwards, but who knows, i'm not the most experienced one here. all i can say is that the choke has never been suspect on these forums before. petcock, floats, and clogged carb orifices have been.

shoot us some pictures and maybe we can help out a bit more.

I will do just that after I get home from work. I see a long night in my future, but at least I will know what the issue is (hopefully).

Thanks everyone for their help and info, I promise to repay it somehow.

except with carb questions.... Grin

no worries.

I forgot to mention that a carb rebuild kit shouldn't include jets (i don't think) and you can just re-use your old ones provided they aren't damaged or clogged beyond repair, so knowing your current jetting isn't a big deal.

As suggested, I'd check the vacuum line first.
