Ventura Bike Rack & Tour Tank Extra Fuel Capacity
01/27/12 at 22:03:12

It's not like the LS650 gets the best mileage anyway, but when the motor starts getting hotted up with a Lancer carb and cam and some porting/polishing for the cylinder head, that mileage number takes a bit hit really quickly.  And worse, of course, is that the LS650 doesn't even hold three gallons in the first place.

So I've been thinking about using a Ventura Bike Rack with a .5 gallon or 1.0 gallon Tour Tube strapped to it.  Anybody here have a Ventura Rack or similar setup for carrying extra fuel?

If I am taking a trip up north to canada, I bring along an extra gallon in the saddle bag. Saves on cash.

I have a bit bigger four gallon tour tank mounted on the back of my Sav. It's with a five gallon Harley tank on mod on the front. If you're wanting to go the long haul you can't beat this combo for distance. I push 400 miles pretty easily if I have to.

Has anyone tried the ventura rack?

I'm looking for a better top case rack.  Maybe the lower sport-rack would work?

Hepco and Becker claims to make a rack for the ls650 but there really aren't any pictures of it anywhere on the internet or in their catalog.

Jack 650, I have obtained a similar tank (5 gal HD) for my Savagem, but cannot work out what to grind and what to weld in order to fit it.

In other words... should I grind away all the HD stuff underneath the tank and weld "Savage-compatible" anchor points, or should I leave the tank as is and work on the bike's frame?

Methinks the former option is a better idea because it allows me to use the OEM tank for city use and the bigger tank for long-range cruiing...

Ideas? Suggestions?  Smiley

What I did was first, cut off the pegs that hold the front of the stock tank in place. Secondly you've got to drill a hole through the brace triangle behind the forks for the bolt that goes through the front of the Harley tank (that I have at least) and come up with spacers for each side. The hole I drilled came out really close to the horn bolt hole. I used stacks of washers wrapped in electrical tape as my spacers. Thirdly you need to get a longer bolt to go through the front seat front frame bolt hole that can reach up to the Harley tank 'cause it won't fit all the way down to the frame because the channel up the middle is too narrow at the back. The  tang on the front of the seat will go under there as well and adds the advantage of raising the front of the seat some. Lastly you'll need to move some wiring around under the tank, move the starter assist solenoid and figure out what you want to do with your speedometer and horn placement.

Fairly easy chores, but it takes some thinking. Don't know if you're interested in how mine was done, but if you are you can dig back through the archives on here and find a couple of write-ups I did on my mod a few years ago. If there's enough interest, I suppose I could re-do a step by step on the job. Someone would have to remind me how to upload pics to this site. BikePics is probably not the best way to go for this task.

Oh yeah, the tank on the back is great for long trips AND for letting you shop for lower fuel prices before you have to have it. Gravity feed with an inline cut-off valve into a "Y" connector with the stock tank line. You just have to remember to shut off the front tank if it's full and you run on the back tank. It will gravity feed into the front tank causing a run over from the gas cap. Nothing quite like a gas soaked left leg up to the crotch on a long trip to south Florida on a hot, sunny July day without a shower or rain cloud in sight. I promise you'll remember the next time.

I hate gasoline on me. I was changing a filter on a pump at a store & some IDIOT turned the pump on,, thank God I hadnt gotten the filter all the way off,, I spun it up as fast as I could, but was wet from head to toe. I drove home in underwear. After a trip to the mens room.

Yup. It burns, it stinks and . . . Well, there is nothing else. It's just bad. And I meant right leg. I seldom ride the Sav facing backwards. Not that there's not nice stuff to look at back there.
