wont work with a rim brake bike, better to go with studded tires in that situation.

that bike has disc brakes. Some bikes have a coaster brake, to stop just pedal backwards or use your foot against the tire.

In the early days of the automobile, when wheels were spoked (wood or steel), drivers would wind a rope around their tires for a similar effect.
