Friday the 13th...
01/16/12 at 11:02:05

Both my computers crashed... Suck!...
.. and we went for a ride,.. and Gerry got rear-ended,... again...
(he's okay, just a love tap, from a jeep)...
We was riding 3 in a row, stopped at a light, me in the middle, Gerry at the rear, and I heard the squealing tires as the jeep skidded to a stop, just in the nick of too late...
No damage or injury, but an inch more would have been a launch...

So,.. I've installed some bigger tailights (Road King turn signals, actually),.. and added some reflective tape to my helmet...
I was gonna' do stripes, but went for stupid instead... (try to trigger the facial recognition instinct)...
... Smiley...

Huh...

makes me re-think putting LED lights or smaller lights on the rear.

I wonder how much of that was "they didn't see you" and how much of that was "they weren't paying attention and all the lights in Vegas wouldn't have helped."

How about a jacket like mine that is bumble bee yellow in color. I never understand why riders wear gray jackets that blend in with the pavement, or black ones either.

My helmet is candy apple red.  While a red helmet and yellow jacket may be a bit unusual, I've been told by others who were behind me that I'm really visible, to the point of being attention getting.

White helmet will do- they think your a cop at first sight, especially if you've got a white bike too.
I put a headlight modulator and led running lights and brake flasher on mine.

Yep, white helmet gets attention.  Also, while it may not be the most practical, how about activating the emergency flashers when stopped at a traffic light?

I am afraid that I don't buy into the visibility thing.  To see you, they have to be looking.  As a friend of mine once commented, "Nobody ever 'didn't see' a Hell's Angel."   If they are busy texting, or just daydreaming about their date for that night, it won't matter it you are wearing flashing strobe light.

Gerald -

Sorry, but looking is only one part of the problem.  If you're "attention getting", you may spurn a person into seeing you who otherwise would not.

That's why fire engines are painted either red or lime green, why road workers wear lime green or yellow vests, etc.  You can grab someone's attention with vibrant colors who otherwise wouldn't see you.

And flashing strobe lights do work for bicyclists - I'm also one of them, and the numbers prove it.

might be illegal depending on the state, something about red flashing lights. maybe.

they DO make flashers that pulse your tail lights three times when you step on them though.

I guess that I should point out that emergency vehicles of all types, including day glo red and green fire engines, have many times the accident rate of ordinary vehicles.

Go figure.

It makes sense to cover all the bets, which to me means a combination of bright colors and functional paranoia. Seeing how drivers tend to (not) respond to emergency vehicle sirens and colors is ample evidence of incompetence, inebriation, profound myopia or all of the above; the implications for motorcyclists are obvious.

I just ordered a decidedly YELLOW helmet from Revzilla. Ida got it in "Safety Orange" had that been available. But I'll continue to assume I'm invisible. Or a target.
