Rim: rechrome or buy new?
01/09/12 at 13:06:36
My front rim is looking rough. My local chrome plater will charge me about the same as buying a new one from Ron Ayers. Is there an alternative, or a plating shop that isn't so expensive?

Paint over chrome is very subject to damage.
Powder coat is more recommended.

A good powder coater will sandblast the rim before coating. A good painter will also blast, or add adhesion promoter to the undercoat.
I assume you're talking about disassembling the rim/spokes/hub and then re-lacing, truing, remounting the tire and tube, and balancing -- or having a pro do it. If the latter, then figure that into your costs.

I was quoted $230. But he buffs out any imperfection and gives you a finish that is absolutely perfect. There's an online company Chromegods that said they'll do it for about $125. But There's shipping costs and dealing with an unknown company.

Ooops just noticed you asked about chroming a fender. This thread is about chroming a rim. So ignore my prices.

I typed fender by accident.. I meant rim... but still, I'd buy a new one myself and get that one powder coated or sell it to someone looking to powder coat it...

I have my rims powder coated. It was $50 a rim, sand blasted first and everything. They came out very nice.
