Help replacing my drive belt needed..
01/07/12 at 16:28:03
Hey guys! New member, wish it was under better circumstances.
I had my belt break on me last week and I've ordered a new one and am attempting to get the bugger on there. Only problem is I can't for the LIFE of me get the nut off of the front pulley (drive pulley) so I can slap er on there.
Any advice? Anyone know for sure which way it's threaded? Something I need to do before taking my wrench to it? I've just been putting it in gear and putting a little tooth wedge in there to stop it from moving but so far all I've done if stripped the nut a bit -.-
I did flatten the lock washer.

Thats a normal nut, Right hand thread, lefty loosey, Put it in neutral & take the old belt & thread it thru & onto the pulley, Clamp it together & make it so it cant go anywhere, rent an impact & a small compressor, You might get it with a ratchet & pry bar, once you get the old belt on it & held so it cant get away, if not, then lay hands on an impact.

Son of a .. The guys at the local shop told me it was backwards threaded!
My dad just came over with the biggest socket wrench I've ever seen and she popped right away.
Thanks a lot for the reply!
How cool that there's a whole site for savage owners, hopefully I'll have more positive things to post about for now on!

close to 80 ftlbs torque holding it on.
don't use a wrench, use a 6 point socket.
I put about a 9mm socket in between the belt and pulley and lock it against the case. that and a long breaker bar should do it.

You really shouldnt need anyone to tell you which way a nut goes. If the nut is on a spinning shaft & the top of the shaft goes forward & its on the starboard side, its left handed, Now, work from there. Engineers design it so that the inertia of the nut will tighten the nut when the shaft accelerates its rotation. On the port side, if the top of the shaft goes forward, its right hand thread. Reverse shaft rotation, reverse thread. You can also look at the thread thats exposed, Hopefully, there will be some thread exposed.
