Headlight replacement
01/02/12 at 12:26:25

What head lamp can be substituted for the stock savage light. Re-doing my bike and I want to put a larger diameter front light on it. I think I read somewhere that the light from the intruder is a exact fit, just larger.

Or you can drill a 3/8ths hole through the bottom tree and mount any aftermarket Harley headlight. That's what I did on my '86.If you look under the bottom tree, the way the aluminum is.It's recessed right where you need to drill. It centers it between the original holes. My mounting block on the headlight covered the original holes.

I just put an aftermarket HD headlight on mine and only had to drill a couple holes in the mounting bracket.  It's only a partial success because I also installed an HID kit but something was amiss and part of the wiring for that kit melted down.  I reverted to the prior setup with the new bucket/lens.  I'm still assessing the HID fiasco.  I really like the idea of having more light with less power draw.

Thanks.  It's definitely sturdier.  This one is chrome-plated steel.  I believe it's 7” diameter.

Yeah, when I started with the HID kit I noticed the stock plastic bucket was starting to crack in several places and decided to find something different. This is how it looks without the the windshield.  I've always liked the look best without the screen but it is sometimes useful.

Hmm, I'll have to consider. I have a 55 watt HID bulb in the stock housing. Is there enough room in this enclosure to include the ballast, or do you have to mount it externally, like I had to with the stock housing?

There is room, though you'd have to create some sort of mounting surface/bracket inside as it's all curved.  My plan was to use some liquid steel or JB Weld and create a flat surface to mount the ballast.
