shifting gears - cold weather??
12/20/11 at 08:18:43

ok I need my MC GURU possee' to splain why I am having gear shift issues up & down......been fine until the last week or so colder weather is all I can say has changed....the lock nut on the extension shaft for the forwared contriols did back off and the linkage was sloppy fora day or so until i titghtened up the lock nut....well now i have intermittent up and down shift failure to engage the correct gear problems.....mainly the 1-2 up shift and the 2-3 up shift - i think i have gotten to the next gear but it will not "click" in gear and drops back down to the next lower gear....very rarely does this happen on the 3-4 or the 4-5 up shift......on the downshift it is like the shift lever just falls floppy loose and does not snap up for the next downshift...mainly on the 5-4 and 4-3 down sift....rarely on the 3-2 downshift - what is causing this?

Check the shift arm on the case, in general, it should point straight down.

Check for any interference with the linkage.

Could just be the cold - affects the oil and the clutch takeup.

If you're using a 20w oil,... switch to a 10w...
If you're already using using a 10w,... switch to a heavier boot... Huh...

I was hoping it is just cold related - yanking/stomping on the shift lever is not making me happy - 10-40 4T Castrol.....last year cold weather was Valvoline 4T 10-40.......dont recall any issues last cold weather riding season.

a.  are you wearing different boots for the cold weather?...
b.  is the shift rod bent?...
c.  does it improve when the engine has warmed up?...
d. when you re-tightened the shift rod, did the adjustment change?...

if none of the above,.. I clueless... Huh...

a.  are you wearing different boots for the cold weather?...nope same boots
b.  is the shift rod bent?...maybe slightly - the extension rod
c.  does it improve when the engine has warmed up?...somewhat - mid 40's is about as warm as it gets.....not noticed in the 60's
d. when you re-tightened the shift rod, did the adjustment change?...got better but not completely solved

if none of the above,.. I clueless... Huh...

The warm up ? probably was in reference to engine temp. Is it worse when you first start up & the engine is cold? Have you tried no clutch shifting?

yes when the motor wamrs up it is better - when the motor warms up and the air temp is in the 60's it is not a problem - motor warmed up good and air temps high 20's to mid 40's still notice it.....motor warmed up air temp 50's hit and miss

Do you poot around about shifting or do you try to make it quick? Id try thrashing it & seeing how fast I could get thru the gears. Do a 0-60 run,

What is weird on mine is that it shifts smoother the colder it is. The warmer it is and the hotter the engine, the more scratchy the gear changes.

I think your shift fork has gotten slightly bent.

Adjust the arm on the case by 1 or 2 splines opposite of the direction you are having trouble shifting.

IOW, having trouble shifting up, move the arm as if shifting down.

I think that will do it.

I love you guys - seriously - always very helpful - I will try the 1-2 spline move with the arm - will report back in a few days - raining here until Saturday.
