impact wrench front sprocket removal?
12/13/11 at 21:06:37

Anyone have experience using an air impact wrench to remove the front sprocket? The swing arm is off so I cant lock up the rear wheel to use a breaker bar. I've heard that you can use an impact wrench but have no idea how this is done or if there is any danger to it.

Yes you can.

and you can also drop a socket in between the belt and pulley to lock it against the case.  I forget what size, 9, 10 or 11.  1/4" drive with straight sides.  too big and it slips out, so start big.

Impact +1,... it's the only way to go...
... but,... not in gear... do it in neutral, and use the belt, or a fat strip of leather, or something, to hold the pulley....

I don't actually know if doing it in gear, would hurt anything,... I just wasn't willing to risk it... Huh...

Or if you're like me, and you cut off the belt before thinking about removing the pulley, you can do something like this with a shock absorber preload adjuster wrench:

(Man look at the crud on that engine.)

I've never used an impact wrench before. There seems to be a speed (torque?) adjustment with four settings. Which one should I use?

Not necessarily. There are several cases of the pulley splines wearing down. That can only happen if the pulley move on the shaft. If it can move on the shaft, it means the nut isn't tight enough, which means you might need to overcome only the friction of the locking gizmo built into the end of the nut.
