Blog memo written BttbB

I have occasionally met Pearl Harbor Vets at VA hospitals (Ann Arbor and Battle Creek) and as I do with all recognizable WWII Vets (they often wear ball caps stating that) I always walk up to them and offer my hand and thank them. We are losing approx. 2,500 WWII Vets a day, I've heard, and they all soon will be gone. The youngest right now would be 83 if he was a 17 year old soldier/sailor in 1945. I recently spent time chatting with a one who was B-24 flight engineer/gunner who was shot down over Germany and spent 8 months in Stalag Luft III. As the Russians closed in on their camp, the Germans marched them 300 miles northwestward with little food and sleeping in the open until they were 'liberated' by the British Army in northern Germany one week before the surrender. He was in the same Bomber Group as Jimmy Stewart who flew B-24's over Germany and was 19 when he parachuted into captivity...

That Jimmy Stewart was one cool dude,.. wasn't he...
No one would ever know that he was a WWII hero from him... Never bragged...
He was more John Wayne than John Wayne ever was...
Wink... Cheers to him, and all his fellow WWII hero's...  Wink...

Going to see my 90 year old uncle and 86 yr old aunt tomorrow after church. Fought in North Africa with 17th? artillery. Number 1 gunner. I bought a flag for him to display on holidays a few years back. He always calls and tells me when he's flying it. Since they can't come down anymore (30 miles), we are fixing an early Christmas dinner to eat with them. Of course it was my wife's idea.  Embarrassed Something we have done for old folks in our lives, friends or family. The grocery stores in the South have festive grocery bags for Christmas, so we put some homemade fudge, hand lotion, tiny sweet oranges, hard stick candy, magnifying glass, etc. Just sayin', let them know how you appreciate them.   Smiley

My father in law is 86. Pacific Theater WW2 USN, Quartermaster 2nd Class. Stationed on an LST (landing ship, tank... better known as large slow targets). Said he never went below decks, even slept under a lifeboat.

He doesn't need any more trinkets, so this Christmas I'm fixing his "hot rod", an 85 Chevy C10 short wide that is in dire need of a tune up. He stores pecans in it and every few weeks goes to buy ag diesel or make a dump run.

He wants me to fix "his" motorcycle, Lisa's old 71ish CL100...
