Center case oil leak at temp
12/02/11 at 13:38:29

Yep, i got me a nice oil leak from the seam of the center case once at temp. Ive checked all bolts, and they are tight. Bike has 29K on it. God knows how many previous owners and what they've done to it.

Whats the best way to go about minimizing / resolving the leak without major surgery ? oil/gas resistent RTV along the seam ? JB weld the seam ?

Anyone got a 5 speed motor off a wrecked bike they wanna part with for cheap ?? Smiley

You've checked all the bolts ....  ones coming from the right and the left sides of the motor?

1)  did you retorque them evenly and correctly according to the torque pattern and values given in Clymers?

2)  big long assed bolts that hold up the footpeg brackets, etc -- the motor mounting bolts, did you pull them up to the correct torque value?

ahhh, spaced on the footpeg bolts. sombitch.

I can also admit i didnt follow the manual for the tightening pattern.

Im doing a valve adjustment and some other fun items this weekend. Ill break the manual out and go over all of it then.

I have that nasty seam leak on my old '87. Although mine can be attributed to the gigantic rock I ran over. Punched a hole in the bottom of the motor. I've JB Welded over the hole, over the cracks, over the seam all the way out to the smaller bolts on the outer edges. Mine still leaks. Not to mention it knocked the whole motor out of alignment just enough to cause belt noise on the front pulley, and a variety of other things.
Hopefully, retorqueing will solve your problem. It won't solve mine.  Undecided

OK, got everything torqued up to spec, and got it up to temp with a good 45 min ride at speed, parked it at home, and its still leaking. Such a bummer.

I just changed the oil with some rotella t as well. Runs and shifts like butter !!!

I think i may have found the source of my leak. Going to try a fix today.

( looks like the speedo cable connector is allowing oil to leak all the way down the back and collect/drip right at the bottom center of the cases. )

Found and fixed the leak !!

The speedo cable was broken above the metal piece which fits in the case, and it was allowing oil to bubble and drip.

I cut the old cable, and found some sheet metal and cut a piece to fill the hole, then reattached, and no more leak !!!! Hooray !
