Capping off speedo cable outlet
11/27/11 at 14:21:51

I'm not using the speedo cable and want to close off the outlet on the engine. Has anyone done this and if so where did you find a screw-on cap for the outlet?

If you aren't going to use the speedo cable anyway, wouldn't it make sense to just cut the cable, and remove the connector? Then you could cut a small piece of metal/plastic to fit inside and plug up the hole and re-install it. As long as you have the seal in there, I think it would work well, and it should look pretty clean...

The seal works against the cable, and it is not necessary if you are just capping off with the cap as shown.

Chopping off the cable to use the seal to keep the chopped cable from leaking ignores the fact it would be sorta aborted and ugly.

Leaking or missing seals (fell off when you took the cable out and got lost in the grass) have been an issue for years -- we have coped by using the "O" ring trick because the only way to buy a seal from Suzuki was to buy an entire new cable and that was too too expensive for anyone to consider since the "O" ring was less than a buck.

Folks who are doing these RYCA mods are very concerned over how things LOOK ....    If it don't look right they ain't gonna do it.

I didn't mean to leave the chopped off cable in the cap. You're right, that would look pretty silly sticking out of the crank case.
What I meant was to cut the cable and remove the cap by itself; using something to plug the remaining hole...
Can you picture that? I hope I am being clear.
Cheers!

I used a chrome piece I found on a broken kitchen faucet. Capped with rubber insert. Not sure about the measure, but even here water fittings and threads are in inches. It fits perfectly and it looks... exactly like two smaller fittings on top of the faucet:

Just haul the cable assembly down to a hardware store & see what you can find. Or, hack the cable, build a plug & go. That would be the certain  answer, mite save time & have a salable item by not cutting & building,

To make it look RIGHT, the proper solution would be to mill the speedo threads off the crankcase, then press in an insert and mill it flush.  Grin Grin Grin

I agree, that'da be done right! All right. Or cut it flush, cut an inside thread, screw in a cap of some sort... Possibilities are endless... even weld a plug and grind flush... Just fantasizing...

Contacted Mike's and they say the cap is 14.5mm. Ours is more like 16mm. Too bad.
