A Tale of Woe and Yuck...
10/29/11 at 18:54:02

Went for a little ride with Gerry Hughes... down the Old Spanish Trail, through the Saguaro Monument east of Tucson... where I have a habit of short cutting through a housing development to get to the sleepy town of Vail, because the road gets really nasty...
... but,... about 1/2 mile down my short cut, I see Gerry has buggered off down that old, pot holed, washboard of a road that I try so hard to avoid...
Well,.. if he can take it so can I... So, I whipped around and tried to catch up with him and his big ol' Harley 1200 Sporty......
... and by Gumby they repaved!... smooth a glass and windy as a rattlesnake!.... Weee!...  I zip along at between 70 and 85,... gleefully feeling the front end lighten from the speed...
Never managed to catch Gerry....    but, we hook up at little country store and stop for a coffee...

Woe and yuck is coming... (it's actually here already, I just don't know it yet).... at the store, I settle in to a porch bench, lean back, legs crossed, feet propped on the rustic railing, and drink my coffee, and life is sweet...
...a half hour of chat and we head home...
... it's not until I get off the bike at home that I feel a wetness behind my right knee...
Now how did I get the back of my knee wet on a bike ride?...
In a motion much like a dog chasing it's tail, I spin around to try to get a better look at the awkward spot of wetness and through the corner of my eye I spy an odd dangly thing on the front of my left knee....  it's furry,... and seems to be glued in place by a greenish yellow paste,.. of,... guts.....
It used to be a caterpillar... a big one... nice and juicy, and about as big as my thumb...

So, I not only hit him,... I sat and worked him deep into my jeans for half an hour over a cup of coffee...
Sorry little feller,.. no butterfly for you...

Gonna' go hose my jeans off now,... you know,..
...before he gets all crunchy and stiff...  Huh...

Sounds like a Monarch larva by your description, but I don't think they breed down there.
I used to collect bugs as a teen and found a moth (a big one, it's body was about 3" long) that I couldn't identify. I took it to the university and they told me it was from the southern US and had probably hitch hiked up in a truck

I see slugs like that on the side of my house on cool damp/wet mornings. People used to think I liked salty food because I carried a salt shaker in the console. Told 'em "nope, it's for killin' slugs while the car warms up."  Grin
