motorcycle & sand accident

last sunday leaving work on a two trail road the sand got me! in first gear going slow, the sand started grabbing so i slowed down, i was nearly stopped when the bike flipped on its right side. the sand caught my right toe as the bike was falling, on the ground looking back, my right foot was pointing the wrong way! long story short , my right ancle was broke. was operated on tuesday now i have a metal plate holding it together. does any one have any advice on riding in the sand? p.s. the bike is ok!

Yea,... sand is a tricky booger, especially for noob riders...
Logic says, slow down, be careful... but, it's the spinning wheels that keep you upright,(gyroscopic force)...
When I get bogged in sand, I keep the back tire spinning...
That keeps some gyro effect going, and weight to the rear keeps the front wheel light and stops it from gouging into the sand...
The problem with that, is,... if you go down, you go down at a higher speed... so, if it gets too hairy, switch to feet down, and doggie paddle through...( there's no shame in not falling down, no matter how you do it)...

Now, heal up, and get back on there... Wink

You can still be a newbie to deep sand...
I started as a desert dirt rider,.... so, slippin' n' slidin' comes natural...
The key is not to tense up,... and let the bike self correct, while keeping the gyro effect of the wheels going...

PS,.. do we get to call you Hopalong 'till you heal up?... Grin

Riding in sand on a street bike is hardly graceful , but can be done. Deep loose gravel is much the same. Giving enough throttle to keep you spinning and wiggling back and forth is the way I do it. Your rear tire speed will be more than your ground speed, and get comfortable with feeling out of control when you are sawing back and forth on the bars. While a dirt bike would ride on top and squirm a little, the Savage wallows. Sorry about your foot. I hope you recover nicely.

Along with the 'keep moving' theme, its hard not to tighten up your body too, and I've found that if you sit back and dont hunch forward it helps keep the rubber side down long enough to get thru the sandy area.

oh yeah, keeping your feet pointed in the right direction can help too....but then you know that now right!? Grin
