Jog, do you read what you write?  makes no sense.

I usually sit by the bike on the right side, with the throttle tickling my noggin.
Having the correct wrench (17 for early bikes or 14 for latter) in my right hand will reach to the opposite side (blindly) and place the wrench on, open end pointing forward.  left hand holding the wrench on, right hand smacking it down to loosen the plug.

Port, left side if sitting on it,
starboard, right side/sitting on it,
no more confusion.

What's the difference of

if sitting on it

and

?

Jellyroll had it correct in his statement. It's on the right side if you're FACING the bike. Left side when SITTING on it.

It's always on the left side of the bike, whether you are standing, sitting, laying, or drooling on it.  Maybe it is on the other side in England.

Even in the automotive field, parts and such are always listed from the drivers perspective. ie; Left front tire. (drivers side) Right outer tie rod end. (passenger side) Same on a bike. Left front blinker. Oil filter on the right side. Drain plug on the left side.
Confusion averted.

Haha I have a drain plug on the left side and a rock-punched hole on the right side. If I had a center stand I could drain both sides at the same time.

Shocked

It's customary to use the sitting-on-the-bike orientation.

I know that, but apparently Jellyroll didn't. I was trying to help him not get confused by someone mistakenly correcting him.

True, it is always on the left side of the bike.
Saying it would be on his right when facing the bike would have been more accurate. It would still be an odd way to describe it, for sure.

Jesus christ...  Roll Eyes Picture says it all.

I was going through my granpa's stuff 20yrs ago and found an empty can of German made "engine cleaning oil". Asked my father and he said that's the stuff granpa used to flush the internals clean after the oil drain. So he would drain, close, pour that stuff in, start and let run for few secs, drain again. He worked on diesel and generator gas trucks back in early 20th century though. With oils nowadays, and additives already mixed in them... don't think you need to worry about that. Can't hurt though...
