Full throttle in 1st gear bad?
10/14/11 at 17:07:59

I got stuck in the mud the other night going up hill in the rain, bike fell over... it would have been impossible to go back down without sliding everywhere so I had to burn out in the mud in 1st gear to get up and out.. is there anything I should be weary of if it is bad? Could that have a serious effect on my cam chain tension-er?

Just in case you're wondering why I'd be going up a mud hill in the rain like a dumb ass I was going to see my girl friend and had the bike around back. It rained earlier then started again once I decided it was ok to leave.. the Weather Channel owes me some new suede shoes  Angry

Full throttle in 1st is no different from full throttle in any other gear, except parts of the transmission are spinning faster. Since the tire was slipping in mud, it's not like there was a heavy load on the engine.

Next time, use a higher gear & dont lay into the gas so hard.

It was so slippery I doubt I could even stand still long enough to actually change gears... I never hated the rain so much until I started riding for transportation... heh

Start off in 3rd,, if its that slick, its not gonna lug it.

Besides, putting some pain on the clutch is a lot easier to fix than an engine thats coffed its guts out.

I'd try not to do it too often,... in first gear, especially slipping, you can build a lot of revs fast...
If you're ever gonna' over-rev that'll do it...

Besides,.. once your tire has lost grip, spinning faster ain't gonna' bring you more traction...

Well the way that I was standing and slipping, I didn't want the bike to maybe hit some traction and go shooting out from under me.. I've had that happen on dirt bikes before, and they don't have stuff to break off like turn signals and mirrors Cheesy

Keep a thumb by the kill. Avoid hill climbs in the mud?

Has anyone established whether it's even possible to overrev these things? Don't they run out of breath first?

It will over rev given the right circumstances and setup
I've been in the 8k area a time or two running hard 0-60 and 1/4 mi runs during 1-2 & 2-3 shifts
Did not do it purposely but when a speed shift doesn't grab the next gear immediately the engine will go right on past 6500 in quick time.
By the time I could drop the throttle and try the shift again it was already swinging on to 8k
That is when you are thankful that you had your cylinder go through the SILICONE CARBIDE TREATMENT.
yep

I had always heard the definition of over revving to be,..."valves hitting piston". Other than that, I never knew any damage to occur from over revving the OEMs rating for a second or 2.

The engine's not completely stock. Man I really need that Clymers manual that covers 2005+ bikes...

With the Clymers manual I can inspect the engine.. my biggest concern at the moment is my cam chain tension-er just from paranoia  Cheesy

Seriously, a stock bike won't rev much past 5,500 rpm -- the cam won't let it.

I have a bike that commonly revs much higher than that, revved to the point the valves will float in second on occasion.

Valves floating isn't apparently an engine killing thing with a stock low compression piston -- there is no chance of contact between piston crown and valves.

Slap a high compression piston in there, along with a high stepping Lancer II cam -- contact is then possible on an over-rev which can make you an instant "lunch basket" motor.

Them sooper dooper Frankenstein engines sure don't live very long, you could say they were "dead on assembly" and not be more than 30-60 days off on your estimate.
