inverter

Does anyone know if it's possible to hook up a second battery to an S40?
How about an inverter? (Someone gave a 400 watt inverter and I have no idea what to do with it).

sure, you can hook up your cell phone, gps or cammera no problem.  And it might even charge it.

no, 400 watts would drain your savage dry.

Yes, you can add a battery, connect it in parallel. YOu'll then have more current capacity. What youd effectively be doing is, strapping a battery & inverter to the bike, so you can use the bike as a charging station for a 400 watt ac power supply. You need ac often when youre on it? Id separate the batteries if I was using the inverter, so I wouldnt risk draining the battery I need to start the bike. A simple switch would be fine, The charge system isnt gonna shove so much current thrui it as to burn a switch up, Dont get a mini switch,, get one thatll handle the output of the charge system,, it isnt that much, I wouldnt mount that to the bike, Id build a box for the battery & ionverter & hook a pigtail; to the battery on the bike, so I could plug it in.

Why would you need an inverter on a bike? Kinda cool in cars, if wife wants to play on a laptop etc... but on a bike??

It'd be like hooking up an alternator to an electric motor.  The motor would spin the alternator around, and the alternator would create power to drive the motor.  Perpetual motion, eh?

I thought I would make some saddle bags out of ammo cans and put the extra battery and inverter in one using a watertight thru the wall conduit connector to run the wires. I'd put he switch in there too.
Why?
I don't know---but I'll think of something.
Right now, I'm working on a backpack rack that hooks up to my sissy bar.
Maybe  a long trip---I could put my TV
in the other ammo can.

If you must watch TV, just use your Droid.

Seriously, a 400 watt inverter on this bike is too big.
-- These things have an efficiency of something like 80% or so.
-- A 400w inverter will surge momentarily to around 800w when a load is hooked up.
-- 800w with an efficiency of 80% equates to 1000 watts.
-- 1000 watts at 12 volts is over 80 amps.  Ask the gurus here what an 80 amp load, even a temporary load, will do the charging system on a Savage.
-- At a steady 400w output, that would be a steady 40 amp load at 12v.  (way too much for a Savage charging system)

Use the 400w inverter in your car.  Forget about it for the bike.  If you really need 110v on the bike, use a tiny inverter or bring a loooooooooooong extension cord.

Possible ? Almost anything is possible.
You can hook 30 12v batteries to it if you can carry them.
But a sensible answer to your question is,....no,...."DON"T" do it.
An inverter has its place, and it ain't on a couple motorcycles and/or its skimpy charging system !
