Quick ? On Plug Leak Fix
10/01/11 at 11:48:41

Do I need to drop the oil to repair the oil plug leak? If so, is it ok to re use the dropped oil? The oil has been used for about 100 miles.

Just make sure you drop it in a nice clean spot.

I managed to get to the oil leak.  Cool

My question is, when putting it all back together, do I just seal it up with the high temp silicone sealant? The gasket tore when removing the head cover, and the guide in the tech section makes it sound as if everyone replaces the head cover with using sealant ONLY, and not replacing that gasket. Is this the procedure?

There ain't no gasket up there... where'd you find a gasket?...
You just pulled the cover,... not the head, right?...

Just use a good quality silicone sealant,.. like Hondabond...
Clean all the old off real good, before you put new on...

I guess what I'm looking at must actually be factory 'sealant'. That stringy black rubber that peels right off...

Yup, just a liquid sealer that has hardened.

If you go with the auto silicone sealers, the black stuff from Permabond is known to work (I used it as I wanted it to match the black paint).  You can also buy a small tube of it which is more than enough to do the plug and the head cover seal up job.

Some use red silicone sealants (shows up ugly on assembled engine) and some use copper (higher temp, unnecessary except on exhaust gaskets and shows up on engine like red does)

Hondabond, Kawasakibond etc are silver, and your engine is black, right?

If you head is silver, pick a silver sealant by all means.    Wink

But if she is black, go with black ...

I think I'll stop off and get some of the black bond. A shame, as I have a big tube of the red stuff now. I used it to put the plug in, but yes I didn't consider how terrible that could look when you close the engine!

If it is the high-heat red stuff, it'll work fine.  If you want it to look tidy, just mask off the areas you don't want it to stick to; apply the sealant, assemble, wipe off most of the excess, and pull off the masking tape to tidy it up.  You ought to be able to hide most of it.  Use a black marker to hide the rest.

Remember that the cover is also a bearing surface for the cam. A thick gasket would put the surface too far out of spec and cause cam wear, or worse. The boys at my Suzukiship use Yamabond. They started getting it at the Honda/Yamaha dealer and never switched to Suzuki gasket maker cause it worked. I got my parts from them and picked up a tube of Yamabond for $12 at the other guys on the way home. Trying to get time to fix it this week.  Smiley

I used the red... remember you have a THIN layer there. Plus, I think the thin line of red that you get squeezing out makes it easier to see that you have a good seal all the way 'round....who looks that close at your engine except you???
