Mixing oil doesn't hurt,If you use 1/2 $12 oil and 1/2 $2 oil you will have in there $6 oil.But the $12 oil will overpower the cheap oil some what.

1/2 $12 oil and 1/2 $2 oil makes $7 oil, not $6,... unless it mixes badly, then you have $1,200 oil (or whatever it takes to rebuild/replace an engine)

'Cept fer',... there's no such thing as $7 dollar oil...  oil's always an even number price...
... unless it's on sale...  then, god only knows what happens when you mix them...
All bets are off... Huh...

Oh my!!,... I never thought of that.  I can't imagine what would happen if you mixed "on-sale" oil with "full-retail" oil!    Shocked Shocked Shocked

I put some used oil in my old Olds once--it looked fairly clean as I drained it from a customers car--it burned just the same as top shelf new stuff.

Not to change the subject......or is it hijack the thread, but I notice Rotella T has been the oil of the month around here, @ 11.99,....but try to find some,......shelves are MT at all the "Mart Stores"

I think many/most are like me,....buy whats on sale,.....and plenty of it. And (back on track) do you really think that any major brand oil co is going to produce/sell any blend of oil that would not thoroughly mix w/ any other brand w/o causing any problem whatsoever ? How long do you think that co would last if they did ? Roll Eyes

When I started stocking up on oil, Rotella T was $9.00/ gallon. I bought 15.. I still have a few of those & have had to restock with the 11 & 12 dollar stuff.. But T is what I run in the back hoe, pickup, lawnmower, & Savage..so I use a fair bit

A fellow student back in the 1960's had setup that filtered used oil. He made up a box that would squeeze a standard roll of toilet paper flat.  Oil went in one side and out the other. It was all gravity fed, so the "processing" went very slowly (days per quart).

He would heat up the oil in a pot first to boil off any acids/moisture/liquid impurities, according to him. After it cooled, he'd put it in a bottle that drained into the toilet paper container, that drained into empty glass bottles (they didn't use plastic bottles back then).

His "reclaimed" oil did look clear and clean.  We discussed things like additive packages not there anymore, other clear but undesirable liquid stuff that might still be in there, viscosity index change, etc., but we were all poverty stricken at the time.  All that mattered to him was that he could save a few bucks a month (maybe) on oil.

I would see if you can find an ad or circular that has T on sale and try to take it to your local auto parts store.  Most reputable auto parts stores will do price matching just to keep your business.  They usually have a pretty good margin of mark up that they can work with. So they can give you a break on the price.

As far as the Savage goes, we're not dealing with a highly stressed, high performance machine here, so oil choice isn't that critical. Now, having enough oil is another matter.
