brakes squeek

Front (mostly) and rear brakes squeek when applied. Bile only has 3500mi so I don't think they need replacing.  How can I quiet them down?

i am far from an expert and i am certain others will have more technical solutions ... but i use the same approach as i do on mountain bikes.  clean the rotor on the front brake ... i use regular rubbing alcohol on a clean rag.  for me that normally takes the grime and the squeak out.  the alcohol evaporates leaving no residue.

with my bike it is normally the front brake that squeaks and i have not had to do anything about the rear brake yet.

good luck.

Thanks for that tip, I have some squeaking with heavy pressure applied, so I'm gonna try this. Is the rotor the lil thing a ma jig that grips the disc (I'm being serious)?

rotor = disk
brake caliper is what grabs the disk.

So will lightly misting the inside part of the caliper that makes contact with the rotor help, or are there any needed lubricants in there can be stripped?

I agree with the others in that cleaning them up will help.  Clean stuff is universally a nice thing, eh?   Smiley Smiley Smiley

In addition to that you might try taking off the caliper, taking out the pads, and cleaning all that stuff too.  While you have it apart:
 -- Use a very light coating of brake grease (very high temp grease) on the parts that slide, being careful to not get any on the rotor or the pad material.
 -- Rough up the surfaces of the rotor and the pads a little.  Just take off the glaze, don’t actually sand them down.  Use a stainless scrubber pad, or rubbing compound, or 320 wet-or-dry, etc.
 -- On the backs of the pads, put a light layer of RTV.  Rub it in a bit, then get a paper towel and wipe most of it off.  This stuff is messy so be careful to not get any on the pad material.  Then go away for 12 hours or so, and reassemble.

These steps tend to change the resonance frequency of the stuff that squeaks, hopefully keeping the squeak from starting up in the first place.
