Anyone done this before? Which wires go to which posts of the toggle?

Sounds simple, but not so easy for an electro-idiot like me.

Are you saying that the wire from the main fuse (the “hot” wire) goes on one terminal and the remaining three go on the other? Doesn’t sound right to my uneducated brain.

According to the Clymer wiring diagram (p352) there are two circuits that get connected when you turn the key switch to “ON.”

Circuit #1 red/black wire(from the main fuse) connects to an orange wire (to the regulator/rectifier and other bits)

Circuit #2 A gray wire (from/to ??) connects to a brown wire (from/to ??).

The Question: Since a toggle switch only has two terminals, which wires go on which terminals?

If you are just switching power "on/off", the hot lead goes to one terminal and the items to be fed go to the other. Assuming SPST switch. I don't know what the amp rating should be, would guess a 5 Amp switch would work fine.

If the existing switch has an "accessory position", a different kind of switch will be needed and more detail is needed to know how to wire it.

I can't say specifically for our bike but I have done this for cars before so hopefully this helps and applies as it is how you would do it for car ignition systems.

Basically your ignition has two power wires, one is constant and one only gets power when you turn the key. A toggle switch is basically a tool to open and close a circuit. You need to have one post wired with the constant power. The other post needs whatever wires you want to have power when the key is turned. So without the toggle switched the starter will not have power because you essentially have a broken connection. Once the toggle is switched the connection is made. Hopefully that is a simple explanation that makes sense

Like I said...

Our stock switch, taps the tail light only when you turn to the right,... it taps that and everything else when you turn to the left...
Just connect both to one side of the SPST toggle, and hot to the other side...
Unless you want that tail light only position...( I disconnected that one right away on my bike,... it's a dead battery waiting to happen.)...
Then you'll need a double throw switch...

(Not sure if more modern Savages have flashers instead of tail light,... mine is a 97')... If that's the case,...
I'm really not sure... but, you probably don't want to connect that one at all...

Here's the answer to my own question:
Since the stock key switch closes two circuits when turned to "ON" the toggle replacement must be a "double post single throw" (DPST) type. This gives you two contacts on one side, two contacts on the other. The toggle is either in the "ON" position (both circits on) or "OFF (both circuits off), just like the key switch. Just be careful that the switch can handle 20 amps.

A good source for switches or almost anything else when it comes to hardware is www.mcmaster.com
Racing supply shops such as Summit may also have these switches

mcmaster is great for hardware, but you'll never find a better selection than digikey (digikey.com) for electronics and related items, in my opinion.

DPST switch rated at 20amps for 12v:

as for shutting off in the rain, digikey probably sells receptacles for that type switch too. waterproof ones... well, that i'm not sure of.
