Opinions Needed
09/20/11 at 09:21:33

I have two Savages...one is an '02 and one is an '07

I bought the '02 first and did a bit of work on it, including brand new tires.
Then, I lucked into the '07 for $2000 bucks with less than 1000 miles on it.

The '07 has the original tires on it, but only 1400 total miles. The tires don't look bad, but they are not new.
The '02 has brand new tires that I just bought a few months ago as I mentioned before.

I'm going to sell the '02 but I'm irritated that I would be selling the older bike with BRAND NEW TIRES.
So, I called a few shops to see what it would cost to swap out the tires on the two bikes. The shop I feel most comfortable with also happens to have the lowest price quote, which is $180 bucks to swap the tires, balance, etc.

What would you do ?

Just swap the wheels...  unless the condition of the rims is so very different as to make a difference.

I agree with youzguyz, swap tires & rims unless the 02 rims are in poor shape. (Free upgrade on the 07 that way)

Should be around $60 labor to swap the tires at a shop, if you can't find cheaper labor pull the tire/rims if it's an upgrade for the '07.

Where are you located and what are you asking for the '02?

I'm located in Frisco, TX...just outside of Dallas.
I'm going to be asking around 2K for the '02...has less than 5000 miles on it. I still have a few minor things I want to clean up on it and fix. Need to get rid of the speedo squeak and replacing a faulty petcock. Just want to get it sold while we're i the nice riding season.

I would sell it like it is new tires would make it sell better.

A halfway solution is to pull the wheels/tires and take just them to the shop for swapping. That would save the cost of removing and reinstalling.

Or get some tire irons and learn the manly art of tire changing yourself. (pounding on chest) Aaaaargh, I am MAN!

+ whatever

as long as the appearance is comparable on the wheels, just swap them.
and you should be able to do it yourself.

The front is real easy, loosen the pinch bolts, remove the axles, catch the spacers before they roll out into the street, swap wheels.

Rear is more fun, I would remove the left shock, remove axle, push tire forward, remove belt from pulley, slide tire back, catch all the other junk that falls off, you can pull out the pulley and brake drum and swap wheels.

take your time and note that only one time have I heard that someone busted something in doing this.

Should have said something earlier, but on the '02, the rims both have rust in various parts that has gone thru the chrome...so, even though I'm going to clean it all up before I sell it, I do not want those rims on my "new" bike.

Since you don't want to swap wheels, I'd leave them as they are.  For $180 you can almost get another set of tires.  Or at least 1 metzler installed.  Not worth the added expense and risk.

Sell the '02 with the newer tires, which will help it sell. Then with that money, buy brand new tires for your '07 which should be around $180.

Ya I'd leave the new ones on the '02 to help it sell. The shop I go to charges an extra 20 or 30 to remove wheels. I'd remove them myself and take them in. Much cheaper. Or, like Moto said, change them yourself. It's not real hard to do. Just gotta be real careful so as not to pinch a tube going on. That would be the cheapest way. And then you're basically only spending the extra $$ you made by leaving the newer tires on the '02.
