I locked up the front wheel without trying too hard. BTW I used dot 3 fluid not DOT 4, as per someones post. The reservoir cap says DOT 4. Am I OK?

Did you stuff your face in the dirt? I can make the front tire chirp with the stock line, I wouldnt want to see that tire stop turning. I saw that once on the Guzzi. I went own so quick my feet were still on the pegs when I quit sliding..

Reply #3 - 09/06/11 at 17:45:42 Dot 3 is ok, if you've replaced all the fluid. Dot 4 is better, and will last longer. just replace it every couple of years unless you do a lot long duration braking.

Quite often it will discolor to an amber color.
This is an indication that it's contaminated with water.
When the brakes get hot enough the water will turn to steam and push the brake fluid out. You loose the front brakes.
Even if the water doesn't turn to steam, it'll cause rust on the insides of your brake system. And can freeze it up.

And it smells horrible. Like burnt rubber pulled out of a sewage pond.

If you have a bad line, suddenly you'll have brakes again.
I changed them out on my '96, the line was ok, but now the brakes didn't feel spongy.
When I put together the '8802, the brakes came from the newer bike and they felt really spongy. Turns out the line was bad. Replaced it and better than new.

Hmmm... those oil brake line might make good vac hose Grin

The hose walls on stock brake lines give a little under pressure, sort of like inflating the balloons they twist into animals. But that's only an issue in high performance use. The advantage for folks like us is that you can get them in whatever length you need and in various colors.
