Worn Rockers
09/06/11 at 02:41:08

Hi
The pads on the rocker arms on my bike are worn The Bike is an 89 but it has a 5 speed motor so it must have had an engine change at some time, the Speedo says 24000 but I don’t know if that is how many miles this engine has done.
I took the cam cover off to replace the Oil plug
the inlet is a bit worn you can feel a ridge the exhaust is ok, how much damage do you think this will do if I run it like this for a few weeks, I cant afford to replace it of have it reconditioned at the moment. I do about 50 miles a week on the bike as its my main transport

I wonder if the pads are the only parts suffering.. Theyre rubbing on the cam, ya know,, hard to say how much more damage wil be done, BUT, if you have no choice but drive it,, what can ya do?

Justin, the cam lobes are harder than the rocker pads so if the bike had oil pressure the whole time the cam lobes are likely still pretty smooth.

The cam lobes do wear slowly to be below spec -- so yes when he has it down he needs to check that.

Rocker pad wear is a fact of life on these bikes, especially since the ZDDP levels in motor oils were reduced by Government action to below what will support a plain tappet pad system like was designed in the 1980's by Suzuki.

If the bike's head ever got redesigned for future use, it would have roller followers instead of flat tappets .... simply required now a days.

Thats good news

ZDDP can be had & added to the oil.

Jpegs work fine -- why don't you just post the location address for your on line hosted picture?    We can just click on the link to see it.
