Chain Conversion
09/02/11 at 07:08:36

Instead of converting to a chain for the sake of lowering the RPMs does anyone make a front or rear pully that would fit a Savage and would change the ratios? A smaller rear pully or a larger front would do the same.

None that I know of.

How about making a list of all the belt drives so I hunt them down?

Harley belts are incompatible, so don't include them.

Here is a link to a belt catalog with technical specs, horsepower ratings etc.  This is just one of many manufacturers.  The Savage uses a Bando brand belt.  It has 133 teeth, is 40mm wide, with a 14m pitch.

http://pdf.directindustry.com/pdf/cross-morse/timing-belts/20096-124381.html

A standard with many companies is 135 teeth and 1890 long, so the standard size is 28mm longer, you would need to move the wheel back by about half that or about half an inch, that is quite a bit when you look at the adjuster.  Bando might have a standard of 133 teeth but as Routy said, it may be made for this bike only.  Belts are easily made to length for industrial users who buy in batch quantities.

The rear pulley on a Savage has 68 teeth, 23 up front.  HD's have a 65 tooth pulley but the bolt pattern is different.  It should not be difficult to take one to a machine shop and have new holes drilled to match the Savage, and it would also probably need to have a bearing insert pressed in to match the axle size on the Savage.  Easy stuff for a machine shop.

But our belt is about 1cm wider than harley's I know of. You'd have to change both front and rear pulley. Think it's easier to go chain, or put a bigger tire  Wink
